there was a field trip last friday for the engineering department to see some engineering related places. the trip included 2 buses, about 80 students, a bunch of professors, and many cases of beer.
our first stop was at the department of transportation building in borganes, north of reykjavik

fellow master students- anna marie (from sweden), asta (from lithuania), and sveinbjorn (from iceland) -we were on the bus with the freshman but also the english translations.

cool mountain

professor birgir and students by the small hydro power plant (8MW)

francis turbine in the hydro power plant

deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring area in europe; they pump the hot water into the towns for heating and showers.

it was really sunny and cold

we all got out and walked over this bridge

our last stop was the concrete factory in borganes. i've never been to a concrete factory so i thought it was really interesting.

they use these colorful plastic balls in some of the concrete panels to make them more light weight. i asked why they were different colors but our guide didn't know.

mountains again as the sun started to set

we arrived back in reykjavik in time to check out the octoberfest tent and the northern lights (which i have seen about 4 times in the past week!).
