i went on an overnight backpacking trip with eyrun (one of maria's best friends) and her co-workers (she works at one of the main tv stations here so i met the people who do the news every day). we hiked 22 km from the small town of skogar, near the southern coast, over the Fimmvorduhals pass (between two glaciers) to an area called Thorsmork where we camped. you need a 4WD vehicle to get to and from thorsmork because there are only a few bridges and many rivers. at thorsmork i ran into andrew trout's (carleton '01) mom!
the hike starts at the waterfall Skogafoss and follows the river up to the pass, there were about 20 waterfalls along the way.

looking back out to sea

one of the many waterfalls

icelandic sheep. they roam free but so far i haven't seen any standing in the middle of the road like in new zealand.

the river between waterfalls

eyrun near the top. behind her is one of the two glaciers we hiked between.

at the top of the pass. we had no trouble seeing the trail but soon there will be lots of snow up there. we had pretty good weather, a little light rain and some low clouds at the top; it poured the next day.

looking down the other side of the pass. the landscape is very volcanic.

the trail was quite narrow in places

looking down the valley to Thorsmork. there were no trees or big bushes the whole hike until we got to thorsmork. but there are many shades of green on the hillsides, all different types of moss and some plants with berries.

trees!
